Roy Ralph – British Artist
1931 (West Ewell, Surrey) – 2005 (Lydford, Devon)

Roy Ralph embraced painting and drawing with an intellectual playfulness and much of his hugely varied subject matter carried a deeper social and political meaning. The quirkiness of his unique style combines skill, spontaneity and a passion for colour.
He trained at Epsom School of Art and the Royal College of Art with further study through the Open University. From 1960-1986 he worked at the British Museum in the departments of Prints and Drawings and Oriental Antiquities, merging his interest in Eastern and Western art. As both an exhibiting artist and art historian he taught and lectured extensively, including a series of regular art history lectures throughout the mid sixties to mid eighties at the Central London Adult Educational Institute. Roy Ralph married fellow student Sylvia Breden in 1953 and four children followed. Many art seminars and courses were conducted from their home in Surrey and subsequently in Devon.
Roy Ralph has left a timeless collection of exciting and vibrant work spanning six decades. His paintings and drawings have both historical and contemporary appeal to be valued, appreciated and discovered for many years to come.
“I hope people will look deeper. I hope people will detect the quiet confidence I have about the future of mankind. I admit to a naive optimism.” Self- confession – Roy Ralph 1975.
